I don't know what's wrong with my printer. It's an older HP Deskjet 697C, and has worked perfectly until I installed WinXP. Now, everything I try to print comes out in symbols, hearts, smilies, letters and numbers, and copy after copy after copy. Can't find a print queue...?

What could be wrong?

Have you got the cd which came with the printer?
It needs to be reinstalled the driver you were running is the "old" ME driver you now need to install an XP driver,
Repost if there isn't one on the Disk then we can locate it off a Driver site for you to download OK? Wink

I think you will have to install the Windows XP printer driver for the HP Deskjet 697C.

The driver is included on the Windows XP CD (and may already be on your hard drive).

This Hewlett-Packard Web page has complete instructions (including video).

HP Desktjet 697 C Printer Driver in XP

The instructions say to first check and see if the printer driver is already installed. Since you know that it is, but that it isn't working correctly I want to suggest a different first step.

I suggest you go to

Control Panel / Printers and Other Hardware / Printers and Faxes

Select the HP Deskject 697 C Printer and then press the "Delete" key on your keyboard.

Then, proceed with the installation instructions starting with Step 3.

I hope this helps!

Just in case...
This page has pictures of both the parallel and USB cables. The USB is on the left, the parallel on the right.

Bed, I tried that and got a message that the driver I was trying to install was not compatible with XP - contact mfg for an updated version.

Here's what that link showed me:

Check to see if the name of your printer shows next to a printer icon.
If the printer is there, you are done. The best printer driver is already installed. Proceed to Step four: Set the HP Deskjet driver as the default driver.

It's there and I have set it as default. There was a document jammed in the print queue but I managed to clear it. Maybe now it will print.

Can somebody tell me why my text is so big?

It may be the default font that's set for MS Word. These instructions may be a bit different (I'm at work, using WindowsNT) - I clicked on Help, typed in "default font" and followed the instructions:

Click on Format > Font...
Choose the type and size of the font you want
Click on (set as) Default
Click the Yes/OK button

You should be good to go.

Just a thought...

Did you delete the "old" HP driver ?
With the 2 drivers running side by side there could be a conflict?(A No Go?) Frown

XP doesn't have "format" "font." It has "View,"/"Text size/large/medium/small/smallest. Right now I have it set to "smallest," but it doesn't want to hold.

Every print job I send to the printer jams and prints symbols. I have put the HP printer disk in, and I am assured by the machine that I have the correct driver, but it jams.

I'll fool with it some more tomorrow. Tired tonight. Thank you for your help, sonnet dear.

No I didn't. I don't know how. According to my printer info the correct driver is there - so it says, anyway.

I'm talking about MS Word. Open up a new Word document and try what I told you.

For once, MSN came through for me. I had to go to IE and change it before it would apply.

I'm going to try it in Word, too. Thanks, guys.

Bedstor, I have been to the HP site you provided and using their automated system have discovered all the drivers I need are there. I have deleted the printer as someone suggested - now what?

Thanks for help.

Sonnet dear, I can't find Word in my program menu - only a few programs are there. I'm sure it's there somewhere, but hidden or whatever.

Do you know how I can find it?

Somebody told me something that did the trick because the printer is working
perfectly now. Thank you all for your help.

Maybe you don't have MS Word as your word processing program. What do you use to type documents that allows you to format things like the font, line spacing, etc.?

Catty: To set the default font in WordPerfect, which I know you use, first open WordPerfect, then select File -> Print -> Details -> Default Font. Set whatever font face, size, colour etc. you want and click OK.

That will, of course, only be the default font for documents created after setting the default. If earlier documents are wrong you'll have to block the text and change the font for each one. You can still change the default font for any particular new document. You'll find the settings under Format -> Font.

WordPerfect's Help files are pretty good. Just put "font" in and all this information comes up.

(This answer is "lifted" from your "Next Problem" thread in Beginners Issues.)

I assumed Word would come bundled with XP - it does with ME. I use WordPerfect. And as I said before, it's printing perfectly now, thanks for help from all of you.

FYI: I went shopping for a new PC for my mother and found that Dell no longer offers MS Word as the default word processor - it comes with WordPerfect. If you want MS Word, you have to pay extra for it...at least with Dells. Gateway is still offering MS Word and MS Works as standard.

I've never bought anything from Dell and will not. My laptop is from Gateway. My new machine I bought online from X-technologies.

I could get Word off my ME disk I think, if I knew how to do it.
