I am assuming that you have windows XP.Try this Fritzzs.

Right mouse click on My Computer, go to properties.
select the hardware tab.
In the hardware tab you will find an option for the device manager, click the device Manager button. *The device manager has your configuration settings for hardware on your computer.*
Under View in the Drop down menu, choose "Device by Type."
In the list of devices look for "Imaging device", "Other device" or "Unknown device."
If the scanner driver is listed under "Imaging device" as usb SCANNER, highlight the scanner driver by clicking on it one time. Make sure the disk for the scanner is in the computer. select Action from the Menu bar and then select Update. Choose the option for automatic and click next.
When the Update has completed click on "Finish." Check under "Imaging devices" and it should now list the scanners correct name.
Exit the device Manger.
Reboot the computer the scanner should now be detected.

"Appreciate the effort Mozart, but I do not have a disk (I downloaded the driver)...".

When we use the term "disk" that doesn't necessarily mean that you must have a floppy or CD disk. It only means to direct the driver update window to the save location of your driver file. You said that you "Downloaded the driver for a Visioneer 5800". In your situation, the save location for your driver download is the place you would direct the driver window too, for installation.

If your Visioneer 5800 driver file is a self executable (the file extension is .exe), then in most cases you need only to open the file and the driver file installation will begin automatically.

One thing I've learned about the the Visioneer line of scanners is that (in some cases) the old driver(s) must be uninstalled before a new one can be installed. See this page for uninstall details. Look for the section in the .pdf file for "UNINSTALLING YOUR VISIONEER ONETOUCH SCANNER
FOR WINDOWS 98, 98 SE, &ME:" or for "Windows 2000 or Windows XP" as appropriate for your computer system.

Well Fritzzs, I hope something will prove to be helpful. And once again, thank you to mozart56 for your great response.

Dwight
