Are you having a keyboard problem? If so, can you use another computer to post in order to more fully explain the problem?

Is this with a laptop computer? If so, what is the computer's brand name and model number.

If you're unable to post, please go to my Website and give me a telephone call...

Hello Dwight my Prince:

Yes, I am having trouble with my laptop keyboard (using an external now). Have been using the external lately, just unplugged it a while ago and now the regular keyboard is substituting letters for other letters.

The laptop is a Gateway Model 450ROG.

I knew you could figure out what I was trying to say, Dwight!

The following applies to Windows XP Home Edition.

Unplug your external keyboard and restart the computer. Does that help? If not, leave the external keyboard disconnected and when the computer has restarted, go to:

(1) Start
(2) Control Panel
(3) System Properties (or just "System")
(4) Hardware tab
(5) Device Manager tab
(6) Scroll down the list to find the "Keyboard" entry. When you find it click the + sign to expand the folder.
(7) Right click on the keyboard entry and choose "Uninstall". OK your selection.
(8) Restart your computer.

A new keyboard driver will be automatically installed during the restart. See if this corrects the problem.

If not, please let us know.

If you've installed a new driver file for your keyboard and it doesn't help, then I would guess you will need to replace the keyboard.

You can contact Gateway at This page and find out about the cost. While there, you should check to see if they can offer any other software solutions. Your computer "Guru" may be able to install the new keyboard. If not, a computer shop can do it.

Thank you Dwight. I was wondering if cleaning it would help.

Thank you, Clarevear. I thought it was pretty clever of Dwight to figure it out, too, but then, nobody's ever said he was a dim bulb.

Dear Dwight, you know what, it's ok today. So I guess what you suggested did fix it,it just took a while. Maybe I had to reboot a couple of times. So your advice was good!

Thanks again, big guy.

And Clarebear, you are the sweetest. I just don't know what we would do without The Big Guy.
