A CD-RW can be used to both read and write CDs. If you replace your CD drive with a CD-RW you will have a fully functional CD drive.

Be careful when selecting your new CD-RW that you have sufficient RAM and processor capability for the unit you purchase.

A good cheap unit is the Memorex 48/12/48. System Requirements:

PC with Intel® Pentium® processor 166MHz or faster; Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0, 2000, ME or XP; available 5.25" half-width drive bay; 64MB RAM; sound card to record/playback audio files; open IDE connector; SVGA monitor and comes with Nero burning software.

It sells for about $70 at Best Buy and they often have $20 mail-in rebates on the unit.

About your old CD-ROM drive. Sometimes the ribbon cable works itself loose and then the drive won't work. You might want to open up your computer and try tightening the ribbon cable at both the CD drive and Mother board ends. I have seen this happen several times.

Also, you can open the Device Manager and select and delete the CD drive. Then restart your computer. The driver will be automatically reinstalled. This often fixes a CD-ROM by replacing a damaged driver file.

I hope this helps!

With rebate that's a good deal! But if there's no rebate then try this:

or for just a plain one

On the main page, just scroll all the way down. It's all in a group called general discussion. Be sure to take a look in the Silver Threads too.
