There are several varieties of RAM currently in use. If you'd like to post the exact model of Compaq you have, I'm sure the correct type can be quickly tracked down.
The correct type for the Presario 5185 is PC100 or PC133 SDRAM. You should be able to use modules at least as large as 128 MB, and probably 256 MB.
If you have the correct memory type, the error you're seeing may be caused by a hardware problem. Remove the new RAM stick and check that the "fingers" of the edge connector are clean, and similarly check the RAM slot.
The fingers can be cleaned with a bit of leather chamois moistened with 100% propyl or isopropyl alcohol (NOT rubbing alcohol!). You can clean the slot by first spraying in a bit of zero-residue cleaner, then (before it dries) canned compressed air.
If you still see the error, the RAM module may be defective.
According to Crucial.com, your max memory size for that system is 128megs per slot.. 3 slots will allow you a max of 384megs if you put a 128 chip in each..
A 256meg chip won't work.. take it back and trade it in for 2 128's..
A-First Website Designs uses a Presario 5185 equipped with 512 MB of RAM. As this model has only 3 memory slots, I infer that at least one 256 MB module is installed. This is why I added "and probably 256 MB" in my description.
