Some laser printers are cheap now. Is it worthwhile having a laser printer rather than an inkjet one for normal domestic us? Inkjets I've had cost a fortune in ink and they are all very slow and sometimes plain erratic, with long pauses.Does a laser bring any advantage in speed and cost?

Laser printers tend to soundly beat inkjets in speed races. Though, with some tweaking (force draft mode), you can coerce many inkjets to spit out 20+ pages per minute.

In terms of cost advantage, it depends on how much you print. If you print more than 50 pages per week, then it would make sense to switch to a laser printer.

For black & white printing, a few magazines suggest the Brother HL-2170. Its pretty cheap for a laser, has built in networking (one printer for all of your computers!), and the toner price isn't horrific. (Colour version also available, though color laser printing can get expensive)

If you print less than 50 pages per week, then you might want to stick with an inkjet. Kodak markets multifunction inkjets with very reasonably priced ink. Inkjets are also a better choice if you regularly print glossy photos on photo paper.

Hope this was helpful!
