On my computer, the original factory settings and software were restored, and all my personal documents and such were erased. There is a Rockwell modem installed on it, and I'm sure that was the one in use before the system was restored. The problem is, I've set up my internet connection again, and it won't dial. It says to check that the modem is hooked up correctly. I can't connect to the internet. How do I fix this?

Try this:

Drag your Mouse to Start/Control Panel & left click Control Panel tab.

In the Control Panel window click the 'Add Hardware' Icon & follow instruction on the screen to reinstall your Modem.

Another thing you can do is make sure that your "internet settings" (also in the control panel) are set correctly. Usually, though, wrong information here makes you dial the wrong number, rather than not dialing at all.

Look through your pile of computer stuff and see of you still have a disk with the modem's company name. If your modem had a "driver", this is probably it, and all you have to do is reinstall it.

I am assuming that if you can do a System Restore that you have Win XP.

If you did a System Restore & it did not reinstall your modem, then do a System Recovery. That will reinstall your modem if it was an internal one.

If your modem is an external one then you will have to reinstall it using the CD-R that came with it. Good Luck.

You can not do a System Recovery with Win 98. That is strictly a Win XP operation.

However, you can do item number 3 in my previous answer on 06:43 10-03-2004, i.e. if your modem is an external one.

You can also do another reistallation of Win 98 from your CD-R. Maybe the restore you did was somehow corrupted.

Also, you may want to go in to control panel, and double click the dial-up networking folder, and then make a new connection. It should bring up the wizard, hopefully you will have a driver in your system for it to find. Hope this works.
Question, what kind of dial up service is it? Are you using AOL?

Let's also consider that the modem is actually defective. (Unlikely if it worked fine before, but a consideration all the same.) I have seen this problem you are describing occur from a surge on the phone line. Modems are just as susceptible, if not more so, to surges on the phone like as your PC is to surges on the electric line. Are you using a modem surge suppressor? Most modern computer surge suppressors have a built -in phone line suppressor, yet still many do not use it.

Don, Sorry about that....each OS is different, I just looked in my Win Me, my mistake.

I did look on the other computer with Win 98 and found it under the My computer folder. Thanks for correcting that. Smile

Soaringhorse:

I checked my Win 98 2nd Edition in the 'My Computer' folder & you are right, it is there. Thanks for the update.

I got it fixed. Sorry for not replying in so long. It turns out, the modem was bad. It's just weird that it worked right before I did the system restore, and then right after I did it, it didn't work. But the modem was fried somehow.
