Why does my WinXP Pro access my floppy drive at startup/restart? My Anti-Virus program is set to ONLY access the Local/Hard disk.

If I don't wait until the floppy drive has finished being probed, I end up with only a few of my programs starting, regardless what I've selected.

Give this a try:
Open, then exit the floppy drive in Windows Explorer before you restart the computer.

I'm thinking you might have restarted the computer when the floppy drive was being viewed.

If that doesn't stop this unwanted floppy drive behavior, give this Annoyances.org page a try:

Stop Windows from Randomly Searching the Floppy Drive

I hope this will help!

Thanks Dwight! I completely forgot about annoyances.org. I did a little more searching and found this which is specific to WinXP:
'Stop Windows from Randomly Searching the Floppy Drive - WinXP

I'll check them both out when I get home from work tonight.

Thanks, again O Master. Wink

Dwight:

I tried all the suggestions, except the Registry search (I'd still be there), to no avail. I posted my lack of success at annoyances.org and referenced AnswerPool (who knows, maybe new members?).

Back to the drawing board. Oh well, at least I can live with it...guess I'll have to. LOL

sonnet26,

Is this happening while you're logged in to XP, or just as you're booting up? Mine does the same thing both ways, while booting because I have the BIOS set to boot from the floppy first, then C drive, and sometimes when I click on a link or program , it will search the floppy too. I'm sure you know if its doing it during bootup, to go into the BIOS and set it to boot from the C drive instead, so it sounds like Dwight's suggestion would be the way to go to me too. Maybe the instructions at annoyances.org are missing a step? Good luck anyway!
