Geeeeze, this must be my day...!

Installed a Visioneer 5800 scanner that is compatible to XP...

When I click it on, the message: MICROSOFT PAINT LINK PROBLEM: Cannot create a link because specified link is already in use.."

I did a search of my computer and I have no Microsoft Paint on it...

What now coach ?????

It seems the full featured version of MS Paint was took off XP Don Frown
The version that is provided is simply called Paint Looks a bit basic Roll EyesFind this by going: Start>AllPrograms>Accessories >Paint
If you click File on top of the Window It Says... From Scanner or Camera...Half way down the list
I think if you have something preloaded on your scanner or webcam it will show up on this link which enables you to grab the image press "capture" and it transfers to the adjacent right frame for editing later to do this click the "Get Picture" button. Can make as many as you like (It showed a self view of myself off my Webcam which is connected up via a USB cable) Smile Perhaps reducing the USB connections to just the scanner only might do the trick?
So put your Image in the scanner Open the Paint Program Open the File link, then the scanner link, hopefully your picture is now displayed? Wink

Bought up paint and clicked on file - the "From scanner or camera" was not hi-lited for me to click on, so nothing more could be done....
What I don't understand is that I personally loaded down XP from my CD, so paint should haave been on it....There is paint in the assesory column....
Should I re-download XP ?.. Also I don't understand what it means by "link name already in use"...
I have a Lexmark 3-in-one program already installed...could that be interferring with the Visioneer program and maybe should be deleted???

Don
I think the answer lies in the "Set Program Access and Defaults" area on the Start Menu under Control Panel If Paint(or your other Program) is Shown on the list? Tick the "Enable access to this Program" box
Otherwise we'll have to have a think to allow a shared access arrangement, means "undefaulting" the other program somehow if it's set up as such? Roll Eyes
No reload of Windows is required
And an uninstall of the Lexmark software looks the right way to go (If you haven't got any of the hardware linked up) Hope you have the Installation disk for this? If this new scanner is only there for a short while? This seems the logical way...Unless somebody knows something else to do? Roll Eyes
