O Masters (you know who you are):

I'm this close to purchasing my system (I'm almost certain I'm going to go ahead and get the new Mac - still wavering a little).

Anyway, I'm going to have to network off my roommate's PC/Internet Connection 'cuz he, or one of his previous roommates, cut the 2nd telephone line & I can't get my own (unless I pay the phone company a couple hundred bucks to fix it). He's trying to sell his condo & that won't be a problem once we move.

Am I going to have any problems with how I set mine up?
Am I going to have a problem with networking a Mac off his Windows ME?
If I decide to install a personal firewall, will it affect his PC (he'll be totally po'd if it does)?

Thanks, Masters

I know nothing about Networking two computers, you'll have to
wait for someone like Dwight or Tom on that.

As to how to hook your new one up, I'ed just get a telephone
splitter ( < $1.00 at Radio Shack) and run that line to your
new computer. In this hookup you both won't be able to connect
at the same time, but I don't think you could even networked.

If the others are "listening" let me know if I'm missing something.

Looking forward to seeing you Blazeing through the POOL with
your new computer, sonnet.

I might not be "MASTER" material however Btye Man has a very good point!

I do havew my own HOME NETWORK but with HIGH SPEED!

Also if your up to it I used a piece of software by (ACER) called (SyGate) which works with ADSL also and there fore maybe CABLE! But it worked really well with 56k Dial-up or any Dial-up for that matter! It allows U to share 1 modem 1 ISP account and 1 phone line with multiple Computers iuncluding MAC! But not sure about OS-X-10 ! And if I remember correctly it networked 2 computer with a CAT5 CROSSOVER NIC CABLE! Not sure aboutr more than 2! I forget!

As I understand - it should be possible to network the new mac osx with a pc. In fact I believe that there's even a utility where the mac will identify itself as a pc so it can plug directly into a pc network.

If you're trying to share a simultaneous internet connection via a dial-up you're probably going to get very sluggish performance. The line splitter idea previously suggested would be a good option - but only one can connect at a time.

BTW - the new mac osx looks awesome, looks like it will run any PC, MAC, or Unix / Linux apps - how can you beat that?

I've seen the new MAC OS-X-10 ! Too confusing! Everything's been shifted around! And no it does not come with a thing to see on PC network! U can share the Internet Connection but not files!

And the performance was not sluggisg at all with the above mentioned software (SyGate)!

It beats asking when he's going to finish "How much Longer?"!

My problem IS wanting to be online @ the same time; I think I'll just shell out the moola to get the phone line repaired. I'll get my own phone line & totally avoid any potential conflicts.

Yo Dwight! Yo TomGL! Yo koicarp! Any of ya'll got any other ideas?

All of youse are my heroes!

The phone line repair costs $200 plus at least $15 a mont for the dail tone! And more for the actual service! But the software I mentioned is $40 or $50 at the most with shipping and handeling! Two nic cards and a CAT5 CROSSOVER cable sholud run U no more than $16 +$1 Shipping as written on http://www.pricewatch.com ! U can always say U saw it there! And upto $10.85 for a 50 foot CAT5 CROSSOVER cable!

And U're on at the same time with one modem, phoneline and ISP connection!

Grand total approx $80! If U get the other line fixed $380 plus phone service!

U're on at the same time with no waiting but my way at least $300 cheaper!

Dwight & ivnj:
Looks like I can network, however I think I'll shell out the bucks, anyway, to get the phone line fixed & avoid any potential conclicts with The Roommate. Plus I'd like a home phone (had one & cancelled it soon as I found out about the wiring problem); I don't always hear my cell if I'm asleep.

Thanks again, All.
