- I just noticed that I put this topic in the wrong section, it should be in Hardware. I would greatly appreciate it if the topic could be moved.

Last year I bought a Mini Ipod by Apple and I've always connected it to the computer following the instructions, and it downloaded my new songs from itunes onto the ipod successfully. Now, whenever I connect the ipod to the computer my ipod does not get updated and this message shows up: "you must add a HI-SPEED USB host controller to this computer to obtain maximum performance."
I don't understand why the connection of the ipod to the computer suddenly doesn't work. And right now I have no clue what the message is telling me what to do. I haven't been able to update my ipod for so long, and I really want it to start working again. How do you add a HI-SPEED USB to a computer? I just need some advice with how to solve this problem.
Thanks!

Per your request, I moved this thread to the Hardware section.

You didn't mention exactly which model of Sony Vaio Windows XP computer that you have. I suspect the you already have a high speed USB port (USB 2.0) port on your computer. Most newer computers do.

The Sony Vaio Windows XP SZ-110B Specs concerning ports are shown below:
Ports:
1x Memory Stick Duo Pro MagicGate
1x PC Card (PCMCIA Type II)
1x VGA output
1x iLink/FireWire/IEEE 1394
1x headphone output
1x microphone input
1x V.90 Modem (RJ-11)
1x 10/100 Fast Ethernet (RJ-45) (no Gigabit Ethernet)
2x USB 2.0 Two USB High Speed Ports(click for pictures)

I'm not very familiar with the Mini Ipod, so I don't know what the problem with the uploading may be. It might have something to do with the last system update.

"Your iPod mini includes both a FireWire and a USB 2.0 cable for high-speed transfer from your Mac or PC. In fact, you can move an entire album from your computer to your iPod mini in seconds flat. With the industry’s only true Auto-Sync, your iPod mini is always up-to-date, mirroring the latest changes you’ve made in iTunes. And if your collection on your computer is bigger than iPod mini, you can let iTunes automatically choose a selection of songs to fill it up." Quoted from this page

I hope that something here will be helpful.

Thanks for the information.
I'm not sure what exact model my computer is, but it isn't a laptop its a desktop.
My computer has four USB ports but I'm not sure if its high-speed or not. They must be since it used to work before. I checked the last update and I don't think that caused any problems. Again, in the error message I'm getting it says "you must add a HI-SPEED USB HOST CONTROLLER" therefore I don't think it has anything to deal with the USB ports. Does anyone know what a hi-speed usb host controller is and how you can add it to a computer?
More info and advice from anyone would be great Smile
Thanks!

Your computer may have two USB ports on the front. They are sometimes concealed behind a door or in a position very low down making them difficult to see. Often the ports in the front are USB2. Also there is often a Firewire port located in the same general area.

1. Click on Start / Help and Support. In the search box, type in: USB2
2. Click OK (or click the green right arrow).
3. Under the "Pick a Task", click: Install USB 2.0 controller drivers
4. In the right-side pane you should see a set of instructions and "clickable" tools to "determine if the USB 2.0 controller drivers you have on your computer are installed".

You can read all about USB ports at this site: All about the USB

The lower speed USB is called USB1
The high speed USB is called USB2

Another method: Use the System Device Manager

To find out if a port is USB1 or USB2:

Right click on your "My Computer" icon and choose:
1. Properties
2. Then click the "Hardware" Button
3. Then click the "Device Manger" button

At the bottom of the list you will see Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
Click the + sign
Sometimes you will see USB2 in the name but often only "enhanced" or "hi-speed".
These all mean USB2

USB Hub, Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller and Generic USB Hub all mean USB1.

I hope this will help!

Next step would be to delete the USB devices, restart the computer & let Windows XP find and reinstall the USB devices for you. I have had that happen several times on my VAIO...

I've tried everything you suggested Dwight, but none of my USB devices worked when I tried to install USB 2.0 controller drivers(it said it couldn't find a better software to install other than what it already has), even though none of them said "enchanced" or "hi-speed" beside them.
I'm going to try deleting them like you said cswchan, but are you sure I'm not making a mistake? Will my computer automatically install them again after deleting them? Do you want me to delete all the devices under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers"?

Yes, very good advice from cswchan. Removing "Plug & Play" devices like the USB's and then letting Windows automatically find and re-install the driver file is a standard system repair procedure. What is plug & Play?

In come cases the Plug & Play driver installation will require a CD or floppy diskette, so in cases like the Audio card driver or Graphics card (video adapter) it is a good idea to write down the program name and model. When possible locate the CD or find the download location for the driver before uninstalling.

But for the USB driver you will not need to do this, though I do suggest you note the make/model of the USB before removing it.

The PC Wizard 2006 can be very helpful with this procedure:
Pc Wizard 2006 This will provide you with a lot of information about your computer setup.
