I am getting a whole new system, computer, key board, mouse, monitor & speakers.

The old system, a Compaq Presario 7585, running windows 98 2nd edition is to be retired.

1. Is it donatable? If so how do I go about removing everything that relates to me? Would a simple 'retore to factory settings' work, or do I have to do domething else to remove all my data on it?

2. If it isn't donatable, how do I get rid of it? I doubt just throwing it into the trash can is not right.

Thanx

David

What kinda processor is in it and how much RAM? Keep it as a good backup or secondary computer! Or sell it at http://www.ebay.com or http://www.barginandhaggle.com !

You can reformat the hard drive and then reinstall the operating system. That will return the computer to the same state that it was in when you first bought it.

You should have received some CDs from Compaq when you bought your computer. Those are what you use to reformat and restore your system.

Your 7585 Presario

The link above should give the "How To" about using the Quick Restore CD.

I must also tell you, reformatting the disk does not remove all traces of your use. A determined snoop could recover a great deal of your data, even if you reformatted. This isn't easy to do, but it is possible. You can use a deep cleaning software program to remove all traces (well, almost all).

BCWipe software

This is a free "wiping" software download.

Hewlett-Packard "is testing a program that gives those who recycle their old computers, monitors, printers or other gear a coupon worth up to $50 for any purchase of $60 or more on HP's online store. Under a program announced nearly two years ago, HP charges anywhere from $17 to $31 to recycle products. The company says the coupon will offset the amount customers must pay for the service, which ensures none of the gear ends up in landfills."

Sounds like a good deal, everyone wins. Hopefully other PC manufacturers follow similar suit.
