What will eventually happen to a computer if running disk defragmenter is never an option? What I am talking about is a computer with a whole lot of extra memory to accomodate a business. The main computer is connected to 2 terminals that are dos systems, and are used for telecommunications. Shutting the business down long enough to run defragment is not an option because this business is used for emergencies including accidents, medical emergencies, reaching a local coroner, and patient connections with hospice. Are there any other options? Will running it for 15 minutes at 3 am every night do any good? Thanks for any help.

To do this, use a third party defragmenter which can run without interrupting other tasks (and vice versa). I understand that Norton Utilities and DiskKeeper both both fall into this category.

I haven't used Norton Utilities, but I do know that Diskeeper does run successfully while other operations are running.

You can read about Diskeeper here:

Diskeeper

I hope this helps!

To Cattywampus:

Since Tom has not answered this query I am taking the liberty to inform you that in Norton Utilities the Defragment program is called:

Speed Disk

You can bring this up as an Icon on your Desktop by going to Start\Find & typing in 'Norton Speed Disk' in the window & click the 'Find Now' tab

When you locate Norton Speed Disk in the left column, drag it onto the Desktop & then click the Icon to start Speed Disk.

To TomGL2:

I note in your answer to angela-cc on 12-10-2002 @ 11:04, that you said Norton Utilities 'Speed Disk' can run without interrupting other tasks.

The 'Speed Disk' program in my Norton Utilites Program of Norton SystemWorks 2003 always tells me to delete other programs running in the background to get efficient operation of the program 'Speed Disk'.

I try to adhere to this but sometimes I can't.

I just wanted to let you know & also angela-cc & cattywampus that the program still functions with programs running in the background, however the programs running in the background will slow the Speed Disk program down slightly but it will still complete the defragmentinhg of the Hard Disk.
