I'm looking for a reliable printer. All it really needs to be able to do is print black and white text, so i'm not concerned too much about print quality. What I do want is sometihng that won't clog all the time as my epson stylus 400 does. Of course, I'd like it to be inexpensive.

I have a Hewett Packard Printer 840C. It works great, no problems. I bought it at Staples, good price and there also was a rebate.

Have you tried other brands of paper? Our printer at work (an oldie), is finicky about what brands we feed it. Wink

My Epson Photo Stylus 820 which is about $100 now has no clogs! Some color hangups but great B/W! With a few minor exceptions here and there which every printer has new or old I love Epson! And head cleaning in the print properties will take of the messy stuff (niosy prints)!

Price Grabber

Or $80 is not bad HP6L

Edited to correct long URL to "price grabber".

Howdy:

I am running an Epson 580 and a C60 on my systems and have never had any problem with them.
The biggest cause of clogs and bad printing is using refilled or generic ink cartridges. get and use the proper ones.

JerseyTomater - it's not the paper that's clogging; it's the ink.
Murray S. - I haven't used anything but the epson ink cartridges with this printer, and it still clogs constantly.
ivnj - perhaps it is just the particular model, but everyone i know that has an epson stylus 400 has had the same problem i have, to one degree or another.
Thank you all for your suggestions. I'm hearing good things about HP and Lexmark, anyone have experience with them?

Methos:

I had an early model Lexmark and didn't mind it at all.. Only problem was the cost of cartridges.. I found I could get as much printing out of an Epson as I could with the Lexmark with the cartridges costing half as much.

I do know people that use both Lexmarks and HP's and they like them.

If I was going to change, I would probably be looking way of Lexmark as I have heard to many horror stories about HP drivers and spooling problems.

I had a EPSON StylusColor 600 for years before it was in need of replacement! I have a PhotoStylus 820 and my had has a PhotoStylus 1270 ! No problems with clogging! even with cheap cartridges! Maybe it's just your perticular model! This will give U some idea! Look at the reviews!

For what its worth i will tell you about my Epson LQ1050 Black & White Printer.

I have had it since 1985. I bought it new.

(1). It takes 15-inch paper width that has the holes on each side for continuous feed.

(2). It has a Platen Knob that current day printers do not have. This is very useful.

(3). You can insert your paper into the printer at various levels with the Platen Knob for doing spot printing.

(4). You can set 10-12-15 & 20 CPI on the front Panel with a switch.

(5). You can set the printer for draft, Roman & San Serif Fonts on the front panel with a switch.

(6). It uses a cartridge type black tape that runs about $8.50 in my area. The tape last about 6-weeks with moderate printing.

The unit is no longer in production, however if you are fortunate enough you might be able to find one in a privately owned computer shop if you are lucky or in a flea market.

If you find one you will not be disappointed in its performance. I give it an AA1 rating.

Try finding a good laser printer at ebay. Maybe an older HP Laserjet will do the trick.
