Here is my major computer problem. I purchaced a DVD burner to replace my CD burner. It supposedly does both CD and DVD copies. My son took out my original CD burner that came with the computer and installed the new DVD burner. He says he is sure he has it installed right.
Problem, it is not showing up on 'My Computer' as a drive. It did, on reboot, show up as new hardware installed. I put in a disc that I am positive works, a music one, and it is not doing a thing.
The DVD/CD burner is internal. It did not come with software. I have Windows XP home version, which I am told is supposed to automatically recognize any new hardware with no software necessary. It isn't!!
I have pulled my hair out for hours with this. The product is NEC ND-1300A, which is apparently a very common product after doing a extensive Google search for a download on this. I can't find one. I have also gone to the NEC site, http://www.necus.com/support/, which I have found a product description, but no download for drivers or software.
I am completely computer stupid. Am I completely missing something on this support site or is the internal DVD not installed correctly?

WF63, Is your son sure he got the jumper set right on the drive? Is it set as the Master? If not, this could cause it not to be recognized by Windows. I've had a devil of a time getting a drive to be recognized before, mostly hard drives, and the problem was a simple jumper change. If it is right, contact the place you bought it from, unless its a retailer, and ask them for advice. If this doesnt work, I'd go back to the NEC site, and send them an email asking for advice. I sincerely hope something here helps!

Thanks much for your much needed advice!! I think I figured out the problem. WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, READ THE DIRRECTIONS! This, of course is after hours of beating my head against a wall trying to figure this one out.
I came across a site describing how to install a DVD burner. Apparently a splitter cable is needed from a power source. There are three things you have to plug in. Only two were needed to run the CD burner. Does this sound right, three plug ins and not two to run the DVD burner?
Another question. Will I also need the above downloads or if properly installed, will the computer recognize the hardware without it? I have been told that no software is needed if the install was done correctly. Is this information correct for XP home?
You need to plug in a 40 conductor flat connector, a four pin power plug, and the small 4 pin sound cord (which is plugged in to the CD sound connector on your motherboard. As for the soft ware, XP does not have DVD software, although Windows Media will play back DVD -poorly in my opinion) I suggest you install Win DVD software. A copy usually is included with your DVD player. Do a Google search for Win DVD and you may find a legal, free download.

I have DVD X software, which I haven't installed yet because I can't get this contraption to even read a disc. Will that work or do I need Windows drivers, software, or what is it-ware for the DVD burner to work? It did not come with any software. I bought it at www.avlogic.com at a pretty good price, considering how expensive these drives are.
