Hi I put a modem from one computer into another one. I have also formatted the PC that received the second hand modem. I installed windows xp ntfs. Now, I can dial up ok and get onto the internet (ISP ntlworld) and I can get my email via opera webmail, but outlook express fails to get my email. I get the following error message
The server responded with an error. Account: 'pop.ntlworld.com', Server: 'pop.ntlworld.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR AVG POP3 Proxy Server: Cannot connect to the mail server!', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90
I still get this error without avg running but the avg bit is no longer in the error message. Device manager has no yellow thingy next to my modem but the only ports listed are COM1, COM2 and LPT1. This is curious because system information lists my modem as being attached to COM3
Below is some of the info from system information and you can see that it has fail next to inboundserver and outboundserver. I am sure I have entered the correct name for the pop and smtp.
Please, anyone know what to do next.

Great Posting! It is nice to have so much detailed information.
First, I'm sure you have seen this but here is the email setup instructions from ntlworld.com Outook Express
In the email accounts setup, what is set for the connection? Try setting your modem as the default, or the Internet Explorer default connection.
Outlook Express --> Accounts --> Mail Tab --> Properties --> Connection tab
Do you have a firewall? Could that be blocking Outlook Express? Try shutting the firewall off and seeing if O.E. can then connect. If so, you will need to restore the firewall and give permission to the O.E. connection.
I hope you will find something helpful here. If nothing helps, please post again and we can try some other things.

Hi This is driving me nuts. I have double checked everything but no luck. I have formatted and done the setting up of outlook express many times over the years I have been computing and have never had a problem as troublesome as this. I have done a ping and telnet the results are:
C:\Documents and Settings\david>ping pop.ntlworld.com Pinging pop.ntlworld.com [81.103.221.14] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 62.253.160.244 Destination net unreachable
C:\Documents and Settings\david>telnet smtp.ntlworld.com 25 Connecting To smtp.ntlworld.com ... Could not open connection to the host, on port 25 A socket operation was attempted to an unreachable network
I have sent an email 2 days ago to ntlworld support via webmail, but no response so far!!!!
Any of the above info help you to help me?
Oh, yes I ticked the checkbox on the connection tab and selected my ntlworld dial up, initially it was greyed out and set to LAN so I got my hopes up that I (you) had found the problem, but it does not make any difference. I also disabled my firewall zonealarm but no luck - anyway, ZA has 4 green ticks against outlook express. Any more ideas please?
Assuming that nothing here has helped, it occurred to me that perhaps it would be best to basically "start over".
I didn't ask but I'm assuming that your running the new Windows Internet Explorer 7.0 (You will see it listed this way in the Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs list). If that is the case, I would suggest uninstalling it which will revert back to Internet Explorer 6.0. I did have one Windows Internet Explorer 7.0 upgrade which caused the Outlook Express to fail to connect. The fix was to uninstall it, remove the ZoneAlarm version 6.5 and then reinstall the Windows Internet Explorer 7.0.
In your situation, once the new Outlook Express is installed, I would setup the Outlook Express and insure that it works, then add back the new I.E. 7.0 and then the AVG and the ZoneAlarm, in that sequence.
I'm working under the premise that something in Outlook Express or AVG or ZoneAlarm is the fault and by redoing all of them, hopefully whatever the problem is will be repaired.
You can uninstall Outlook Express in the Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs/Windows components.
Good luck with this!

Hi Thanks for sticking with this. My IE is version 6, ZA is version 6.5.737.0 and AVG is version 7.5.0.418. I am running Windows XP Professional. Outlook Express don't seem to be listed in windows components? Could that be a reason for the problem? IE is listed, should I delete that instead and reload an IE from the XP disc or one from a magazine. I thought outlook express comes bundled with IE?
Outlook Express does come with Internet Explorer. It should be listed with the Add-Remove Windows Components in the Add-Remove Programs applet. Since it is not there, I would guess that this could be at least part of the problem.
Since you cannot go back wards from I.E. 6.0 in Windows XP, I suggest you uninstall the AVG and the ZoneAlarm and update to Windows Internet Explorer 7.0. Doing that will get you a new version of Outlook Express, too.
You can get the update in Internet Explorer, Tools/Windows Update.
I do think it best to remove the AVG and ZoneAlarm first in order to minimize and potential conflicts.
Once Windows Internet Explorer 7.0 is installed, try the O.E. Setup again. If that works, then add back the AVG and the ZoneAlarm.
You could also try running the Windows XP System File Check utility to see if it will discover and fix any errors in your initial installation. You can read more about this at: http://dwightblackburn.com/winxp/
