My computer is starting to make some strange grinding noises off and on, I'm told that it's probably the fan on the power supply. Can the fan be replaced or is it cheaper to have the whole power supply replaced?

Wow- i never heard of anyone else having that problem. On our other computer we had the same "grinding" sound you're hearing... Is it a tower? or one of those ones that look like they're "laying down"...we had the second kind i mentioned..all we had to do was push the computer casing back, or pull it forward. The fan was hitting the edge of the casing, because for some reason the casing had slid forward...and it was soooo annoying. Instead of replacing the fan, try that first...it'll save you money

If the sound is intermittent, but becoming louder or more frequent, likely the fan's bushings have worn out. Fans are cheap, with even good ones under $10, and easily replaced. Note that a power supply, CPU, videocard, or hard drive fan can produce this noise, so you should verify the source, then identify exactly the size of fan and the number of wires it has. Do yourself a small favor, and spend a bit more for a ball-bearing type fan.

I've never had to replace a fan on a computer, but on the equipment I take care of at work, the fans going bad are always more difficult to turn. This is an easy way to tell which one is the bad one. Give them a spin (with the power turned off) and see how easily they turn on their own. A fan that has difficulty is usually bad.

Also, when you're taking it out, pay attention to the direction of air flow. It should be marked on the fan itself with an arrow. Be sure to put the new fan in the same way. (Often, the fans are wired to make it difficult to put in backwards.)

It could be your hard drive grinding, the one in my old pc would grind and grumble whenever I started winblows. Defragging helps to reduce that if that is the problem.

I hope that is of some use...
