The Roommate (or one of his previous tenants) cut the second phone line and I can't get my own dial-up ISP (DSL in Denver is the pits & don't have broadband in our area).

I installed a network card in his Compaq Presario Athalon (something or other) WinME.

I hooked up a D-Link DI-604 4-port ethernet broadband (yes, the "Tech" guy at Best Buy said it would work with dial-up; I even took it back and asked a second time).

Installed the ISP software on my Dell Dimension 8200 Pentium 4 WinXP Pro and set the account up.

Hooked one Cat5 to my PC, then to port 1 on the router.

Hooked one Cat5 to my roommate's PC then to port 2 on the router.

Plugged the phone cord into the wall and my PC.

Ran the Network programs on both PCs.

Nada, zip, zilch. Help!

All I want to do is to be able to get on the web at the same time. What have I done wrong? What am I missing?

BTW: the electrical cords WERE plugged into electrical outlets. LOL

Double Grrrrrrr!

It's right in the 3rd paragraph:

D-Link DI-604 4-port ethernet broadband router.

First your setup is incorrect! Normally the modem has an ethernet slot and 1 cable goes form the modem to the PC! So U can't just plugg-in the modem to the phone line! 1 CAT-5 Crossover cable is also needed! If U have no crossover cables now go get 1! Plug a regular CAT-5 into the modem and then into the router! But not on the hub side! Call D-Link and ask! Mine says WAN or LAN! Then the CAT-5 Crossover cable from the router next to the modem cable not on the hub side and into the hubs uplink port! And then one regular CAT-5 into each PC! And of course the phone line RJ-11 cable from the modem to the wall jack!

Anyway not too familiar with D-Link as most use some kind od LinkSysy! But some kind of setup needs to be entered! Like in the router where U put the stuff like IP address, DHCP client and so fotrt! Stuff U normally obtain form the ISP! Directions for the router basically! Cuz it's not auto detect! It's all hooked up so greeat but now it needs to know where to go, how much and how exactly! Except its not human and can't talk so U need to fill that in that! I guess its like giving a blind guy directions! After a while he doesn't appear so blind anymore!

I'll retrace my steps again to make sure I've got everything in the correct order (unfortunately, I left out a few steps, that I'd already taken, in my original post); hopefully, your instructions will help me if I've missed anything.

You have purchased equipment completely unnecessary for your intended use. The use of a HUB will do the trick, but even that is unnecessary! If you have ethernet cards in both computer, which you appear to have, simply plug the phone line into the dial up modem on your ME (or better still, a WIN XP machine) unit. Now, either run a CROSSOVER ethernet cable between the cards on the two machines, or connect them using STRAIGHT thru cables via an ethernet HUB.
On your ME machine, go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Windows setup > double click on Communications. Place a check mark in the box next to Internet Connection Sharing. Click on OK and follow the directions. You will make a floppy disk per the directions, and install the tiny program into the other computer. Should get both your units on line.
Good luck! cool

I appreciate the specific information. Sometimes, too much is...just too much. LOL A simple solution! Who'd a thunk it.

Thanks again.
