hey people,
I remember someone saying in a previous post of mine that a cable connection to a computer with a 133mhz Pentium processor might not work, is this right, have I remembered wrong? If my sister wants to hook up cable later to this computer, will she be able to do it safely? This would happen somewhere down the road, for now she'll be on dialup, but I told her I'd find out and let her know, as she cannot afford a new computer right now, much less cable connections. The computer has win98se on it, with 64 MB RAM, a 6 Gig HD, 33k modem. Thanks for all replies!

I suggest you check with the potential high speed Internet Service Provider for the specifications they require. My cable supplier lists these specifications:
Your computer must have an Ethernet network interface card (NIC) either built in or installed.

PC owners must have at least a Pentium processor and 16 megabytes of RAM with Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0.

Or goto

http://66.216.68.88/index.html

On the 6th Catagorie on the Main page it says Computer Systems! The 2 P2-350 there will do!

Just no Operating System, Drivers (available at IBM's Website), Monitor, CDROM drive, Speakers, Mouse, Keyboard included in IBM one!

And Compaq doesn't have a Operating System, Lan, Modem, Monitor, Keyboard or Mouse included. Drivers NOT included but available at Compaqs Website!

But U have all that! Except LAN (NIC) Card which is under $15 or provided by some CABLE

providers! Old monitor should Work!

Or the second Compaq Slot 1 BareBone option for $14.90! Aside form KB, MOUSE, ECT juyst a CPU

HD and CD-ROM Drive needed! The 8th Catagorie says CPU Processors and the P2-266 for $9 will

work there! The old EDO ram will work for that! Old HD will work also! Or P2-350 and Above

will take PC100 RAM! And U already have an OS! So $23.90 + CD-DRIVE + Shipping+old HD and RAM=

Complete P2-266 system! Not bad!

As long as you have the network card and adequate ram I can't see why it wouldn't work. Normal web browsing and email sending shouldn't be a problem. Even at cable speeds, the information transfer over the internet is pretty slow. Videos and other media applications may bog down because they are somewhat processor intensive.

The 133 MHz processor speed in and of itself will not prevent you from being able to use a cable modem in general. My father has been using his 133 MHz computer with a cable modem for years.
