Hi everyone, I'm trying to get all the instructions to set up a network from my main computer to my work station for my older computers, but have no idea how to set it up. Can anyone give me the a list of the parts I need , and the instructions on how to do it? I need to keep it cheap too, if thats possible. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide!

vansrme, a few things to consider.

1. What type of setup will the space that this network will require? If it runs through different rooms and floors you may want to consider a wireless network. More expensive but better than running a lot of cable.

2. Do your computers already have Ethernet adapters aka Network Interace Cards(NICs)? If so you may want to go with a wired ethernet network. Would be cheaper in the long run.

3. Do you have cable internet access? If so you will need either a cable or wireless router to run your computers to.

4. If you have dial up and wanted to save money, a hub would work just as well as a router and be about half the price. Windows XP Professional works much better at setting up a home network than does the home version.

This setup should be very easy as far as cables are concerned, my work area is only about 10 ft. from my main computer, and network cards are no problem, I have a small bag full of them that I bought in a box of older parts. I do have dialup, though I plan on going to DSL when tax time comes around. The hub idea sounds good to me, it may just be the way I go. I'll evaluate all the scenarios I can before deciding.
