If I remember correctly, you have a Gateway computer. You should have received a "Setup" poster with your machine that will show you where to plug in your microphone.
I see from you post above, that something is plugged in there already. Many of the newer computers have a microphone built in to the monitor and the wire for that is co-located with the monitor cable. If you bought a Gateway monitor with your computer, that may be how yours is setup.
You can test to see if you already have a microphone setup this way. Go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/Entertainment/Sound Recorder.
This picture show the sound recorder, recording. If your microphone isn't connected, the green line will be "flat".
Of course, you need to speak or make some noise that the microphone can pickup!
The cursor in the picture is hovering over the Stop button. The record button is on the right side.
Gin, something you need to remember. There are hundreds of different computer/monitor combinations available today. Each is unique in how it is setup. You must include your computer make/model/operating system information when you ask questions in order for us to give you anything but generic answers to your questions.
If you do have a Gateway computer, and you can't find your computer manual/Setup poster, here is a link to Gateway support.
http://support.gateway.com/If you like, post again but give us the necessary information to look up the specifics for your machine.
One thing you might do, for future reference. Make a file that includes all the information about your computer. Make/Model/OS/Internet Explorer version number/Printer Make/Model Scanner Make/Model, etc. Save the file and then when you need to ask something about your machine, just copy paste that file's information into your question.
I hope something here helps!
