What kinds of problems might afflict a 6-yr old HP laser printer that would keep it from printing? It's getting power, the LED display comes on, but no printski - what could be wrong?

our HP black laser printer shorted out and then it wouldn't work for anything.

I loved that beast, but we had to get a new unit after that.

Does is attempt to print, only to produce a blank page? Or does it fail to start printing?

Go to Start/Control Panel/Printers and Faxes.

Right click on your HP laser printer and choose "properties". Click the "Print Test Page" button and see if it will print.

It is likely that there is a test print option using the power switch, but we will need the HP printer model number to determine what the code is for that.

I believe it fails to start printing, Dwight. It has not come to me yet, when it does I'll be back here with the information. Meanwhile, I'll save this.

Thanks again and thanks, Big Guy.

You say when you run the "Print Test Page" utility, it fails to print. Is that correct?

It isn't actually mine (yet) so I don't know much about it. The fellow I'm getting it from said it won't print a test page or anything at all. I should have it in hand within a few days and will be able to tell you more later.

OK friends, the beast has arrived and I must say, I've never seen a cleaner 6-year-old. It looks absolutely brand new. He even sent the drivers. I haven't hooked it up yet, but for your information the model # is
C3990A and the serial # is JPHKOO6274.

I asked my PC man about it, and he said he doesn't work on HP laserjets because it's so hard to get parts for them, but he thought there were a couple of places around here that did. Tomorrow I will call around.

Looking good so far.

My laptop running XP Pro needed NO DRIVERS installed when connecting to an HP LaserJet 6L. Just plugged it in, booted the computer and printed pages. Razz
Perhaps that was due to it being a cruddy, ink stained working unit as opposed to a pristine non-working unit? Smile
Actually, as noted below, there is likely NO driver installation need to run the 6L on XP:

HP has prepared for the release of Windows XP, the newest consumer operating system from Microsoft. In addition to developing Windows XP drivers for many of our newer printers, HP has worked closely with Microsoft to develop in-box printing support for most HP LaserJet printers. This relationship has ensured that the majority of HP LaserJet printers are compatible with Windows XP and have support right out of the box. For more information about a specific product family, please refer to the chart below.
