A good place to start is Dells Website

you choose a model then add what you want on it Customise it
Need a close eye on the Budget! though!
www.dell.com

Can get a rough idea of what cost they will be almost top dollar

Do also try the same Model in Ebay ,Craigslist, the Loot and Recycler websites
and you'll get 100s of Hits and better suggestions bargains and with this Credit crunch. Many people will welcome your Money and may drop the Price?

Thank you, bedstor. I'll check those out. The thing is, Overstock has offered me a complete refund of what I paid for this POS Toshiba laptop, plus $100 off another one if I buy from them. That's a good deal, but it's sometimes hard to tell from their description whether the machine is "refurbished" or not. I don't want to buy another refurbished machine but for $69 I can get a two year warranty, which makes it slightly more attractive.

Dwight: I remember you recommended an Acer which I believe at the time was around $800, but I found one for $579.

Factory refurbished machines are usually safe if you buy them directly from the manufacturer, such as Dell Outlet, or HP Outlet.

The "hot" laptops on the market are the new netbooks. (Most famous being the Asus' Eee PC) They're tiny (10" screen or smaller), light, and have super cheap price tags. Bonus: Microsoft allows netbooks to be sold with Windows XP, rather than Vista.
