Is there some way when you have DSL to hook your computers together without a router? I am not on the main computer in the house and my computer keeps going down all the time. My brother says its the router. So I usually have to reset the dsl and the router to get back on line which means a trip into the main house ( i live in a small one out back)and thats annoying espically late at night or of course when its cold out...lol So let me know of any ideas please..and what is a hub? thanks sam

And a HUB ties all the computers together! Generally the modem is connected to the router, the router is connected to the HUB and the HUB splices the connection to all the computers connected to it! Or at least my setup is like that! Others might beg to differ on which way is the best! Printers can also be shared depending on their design or with a device called a Print Server attached to adapt the connection into the HUB! But if U onbly have 2 computers the above link will help! And its nice to know I'm not the only one who has router reset problems! Do U know who makes it and the model#! Just curious!

I don't think this will work for us since we have three computers tied in together, we are not running off a phone line but dsl. The router is a Linksys 1 port not sure on the model number but, I think its the only one they make. THanks so much. Samantha

This could be a lot of things. It sounds like your router and dsl modem are not playing nicely together. It could be a bad modem - or router - or both, or it could be an electrical current problem which could cause either to reset. Or... it could be an issue with your network connection from the main house to your "out" house. (sorry couldn't resist) I'm assuming that your network cable is exposed to the elements which could affect its performance.

I'd try this: First, contact your dsl provider and see if they will provide you a "second" dsl outlet. You'll need another dsl modem, but at least you won't have to go into the house if you have to re-set. If they won't I'd check the quality of cable that you're using in the connection to the house, verify that it's rated for the outside and the distance that you're traveling. A local electronics or computer store should be able to help you with that. If that still doesn't help, I'd replace the Linksys. My Linksys burned up after about a year. I've had better luck with a NetGear-RP114. They're about $90 new and $50 reconditioned. If that's not it, try replacing the dsl modem - my provider will swap out bad ones for free, check with yours.

Lastly, I guess a heavy coat and some warm boots - I grew up in Ohio and it's going to be damn COLD soon!!!!!!!

Just to let U know DSL does run off a phone line! Modified of course but none the less a phone line! That's the neat thing about DSL, U already have the requirements! No extra cable hookup or whatever! Some even let U talk on the phonre at the same time!

Have you considered the possibilty that the signal is "dropping out" due to excessive length of cable run between both computers?
How far are the houses apart? and b) How much length of cable runs inside the house?
There must be a booster link to fit on the cable somewhere on the Web (I'm sure it will be inexpensive)
They have boosters for weak area TV signals, surely they have something similar for a computer hub link? Roll Eyes
I think the maximum cable length is about 25yds before "drop-outs" occurs, read that somewhere recently .Applies to "all" devices.
