Adding a scanner to my system

Is there a way to connect a scanner to a system where the desktop has only one printer port?
I see that the scanner has 2 25-pin ports, and I'm wondering if this suggests I might connect one of the scanner ports (which one?) to the desktop printer port and the other scanner port to the printer.
If so would one have to have the scanner on in order to use the printer?
Or, am I just way off?
If both scanner and printer need separate ports at the PC, can I adapt one of the other ports, such as USB or ???, to receive cable from the scanner?

thanks!!!

Yes, scanners typically (I can't say for sure with yours since i don't know the model) can be placed in series with a printer. This means you can plug the printer into the scanner and the scanner into the computer. Typically, there are no extra steps (except the plugging itself) beyond if you were installing them separately. The ports you mention on the scanner should look slightly different. One should look like the one on the back of your computer. Plug the printer into this. The other should be connected to your computer.
