OK, Dwight and friends, here I go with another problem. I received a DVD today and tried it in my computer (Dell Dimension B110, Apr 06). Computer tells me there's nothing in the drive. I took it to my laptop (Gateway Notebook, Aug 05) and it worked fine.

I tried a CD in the Dell. Worked fine. Tried a different DVD in the Dell. Nothing. It has a DVD logo on the front, so it's not just a CD reader. I don't recall if I've ever tried a DVD in it before.

I have a cleaner disk that I bought for my DVD Player, but the computer doesn't recognize it either.

Try uninstalling/reinstalling CD/DVD drive in the Dell.

Right click on My Computer.
Choose Properties
Choose Hardware
Click Device Manager
Click the + sign to the left of CD/DVD drive
Right click on the Drive and choose "Uninstall"
OK the dialog boxes and then restart the computer.
At start up, Windows will see the drive as a new piece of hardware and install the driver for the device.
Then try your DVD and CDs again to see if that corrected the problem.
I hope this is of some help, but if not please post again.

Alas, I tried it twice and nothing's changed. A toothbrush cleans a lot of things. Maybe if I stick it in there and....OK, maybe not.

Can you tell us what the Make and Model Number are (label on the drive casing) and we can find you the Driver file
Dwight? My Lite-ON writable DVD drive had this issue as well despite it being recognised as a "Plug and Play" and the original file on disk being mislaid Frown
I installed the New driver file then Plugged in the Drive power lead (with the computer switched off!) and It came up as "New Hardware" Smile

Sorry, I didn't get a chance to look until today. I hauled the tower out and didn't find labels specific to the DVD. Here is the info from the computer invoice:

16X DVD+/-RW Drive. Item Number: 313-4097. Part Number: PC942

Does that help? Thanks. C

It says the device is working properly. The ID is: HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GWA 4164B. Manufacturer says "Standard CD-ROM drives".

I tried the troubleshooting function there. It said to try manual play but my Windows Media Player didn't match the instructions.
-----------------
If this doesn't get fixed, should I consider buying a separate disk drive thingy? (Technical term) I could use it with our netbook, too.

Thanks

I've Got good and Bad news on these drives.
The good news is they have no Driver (is a Plug and Play)
The Bad News is Its Trouble !Seen dozens of posts with the same complaint as yourself! Eek
Only fix is a complex Registry edit Frown
Cheapest Branded reliable replacement should be what I have, a LITE-ON which are Plug in run the driver and ready to use. Only thing (you need to Know) is the connector Type. If its a large Grey Ribbon Lead you want an IDE Drive, otherwise with the small red lead c/w tiny black plug it will be a SATA Drive Type
Easy to remember? Smile

You can adjust this search

Price of a Brand NEW RW drive Lemme see... How about $20 (plus delivery) Tops? Going to be double this price in the city for an Inferior brand
