The fan on my computer seems to be extremely noisy at times, it will all of a sudden start sounding like a 747 it does this sometimes twice a day then may go a week then start up again, what could be wrong. At least it sounds like the fan

Thanks

Fans are not expensive to replace. If you are not under warrantee, it is easy to do also.

Check before you buy a new one that the Grille is unobscured a small bit of Paper may be obscuring it or a dinging sound may mean the grille is touching the fan blades or the grille is loose? The exterior fans if fitted take seconds to remove and refit The Main processor fan Comes away easy but note how its secured into the Heatsink (the Big finned item) may have legs or a clip fitted but again its a quick job to do WARNING...The fins on the Heat sink are very fragile! and Do blow out any Trapped fluff in the Fins while the Fan is off(I did mine the other week) Ir the Heatsink Moves when you are attending to the fan That means the compound to cool the Processor wants replacing ASAP(a computer tech job)
DO NOT RUN IF THIS HAPPENS Burnt Out Processor a possibility
Do not overtighten when refitting the processor fan as the heatsink may lift or break!

Just take your time
Had an idea..and you can spot which fan wants attention Take the inspection Panel off and start the computer up and you should hear where the noise is coming from easier if there is a fan fitted to the panel leave that connected so that will work too. Only take 5 seconds or so

If you have disconnected all the cables out of the Back, bar the Power lead the best way to stop the computer is to switch off the power at the wall socket. Can rarely do it without seeing on the Monitor if its shutting down if you click on the Power button!(common design issue!) Frown
DO Not turn it off with the On/Off switch on the PSU I have blown a transformer doing this on another computer! Means buying another PSU (Only turn if off here when the power supply has been isolated)

Along with the excellent advice already given, I would suggest making sure there arent any wires against the fan that could be hitting the blades.
