I want to be able to access the files on my desktop computer from my laptop. I've had it all set up properly and I know there's some kind of network connection that lets you do this.
If anyone knows how to do this I would greatly appreciate help.

There are several answers to your query
but which one is best for your needs?

Some questions
Will you be transfering saved files Only

Do you want to run both together?

And will they be in the same room or different locations?

Also do you want a free way like Remote desktop or inexpensive Method like a usb memory stick or a USB Firewire cable or pay a few dollars for a transferable portable storage drive?

There is more but these are the best ways

I personally use a Corsair "Flash Voyager" 1 GB USB stick I just plug it in Drag the files into it (like a folder)
And unplug it and I can plug it in on any computer open the file and there are my saved files ready for use .I'm currently using it to store driver upgrades for my brothers new computer (which has not been online) Running as a games machine at the moment.

Note comes complete with a natty neck-strap Cool

I also have a Seagate 320 GB Usb portable drive which works in the same way and I can drag entire programs across This costs about $100 this can fit into a small bag with its lead .Weighs about 4lbs
This is the expensive solution, though there are smaller capacity drives which are of course much cheaper

I'd be planning mostly to use them in the same room and I'd only be transferring saved files or programs[rarely] and I'll need it to be free.

I'm pretty sure remote desktop was the name I was forgetting. Thanks

Assuming that the machines are connected to the same network.... (Geek terms: Same subnet and workgroup) You can use the folder sharing feature built into Windows 95 and newer.

With just a few steps you can pull data across your network, without the need for CDs or USB flash drives. Besides, if you're going to use sneakernet, be retro like me, use floppies! :-P

Thanks for that I think the easiest way for you is to link them together using a CAT5e "crossover"cable which are cheap There is a bit of preparation to do to open the link but it's a 1-off job OK?

And JWooden271 also reminds me that there are lots of places where you can deposit files securely (for free) and pick them up with any other computer

Here is what I found on a search
And some ISPs (and Email providers) have this facility as well ..only down side you must keep tabs on how much they allow and the Size of the space they have allocated to your account.Gets used up quite quickly. Mad
Not checked it out bur Googles Gmail ticks a lot of the boxes I wonder if you can put some files in the 2GB plus filespace?
They are using it for all sort of things ,Its hard to keep up with developments
