i think it's connected
i looks connected
if it looks like a duck
and quacks like a duck
it's probably...
(so much for sayings)
my computer says it's not connected any more
checked the plugs, tried to add new printer...
nada
went to epson.com, downloaded the stylus color 740 version called monitor, (like it's a server that needs monitoring or something complicated like that, i didn't understand, but it was the only matching choice), i installed it fine, but the same error occurs, no connection, there's power to it, there's the big fat printer connection plug plugged in

can i use the that serial port if the LPT is shot, or is it shot, does anyone know how to reintate the print port or printer drive

ps i did move the computer, but not enough for that it should break

Howdy Frank:

Go into Control Panel>Printers.. Right click on your printer and select "Properties".. Now, check the ports.. make sure it is using LPT1..

as in "check" in a flight readiness routine. p.s. thanks for helping thus far. o.k. it was on LPT. rereading my question, i didn't make it clear this download from epson was called monitor, (do you think that that matters (i don't use a server (i'm just a regular guy)))
is there any way to just cut and paste the thing i downloaded into the printer folder and skip the add printer error, "not connected" that i'm getting. (when i downloaded it made a folder called epson, but i think i had a choice were it would be put finally... do you think i should of put it in my settings/control panel/printers folder) Mad

Frank:

That particular program is the one that monitors your ink levels, etc.. You really don't need it if you don't want it..

Just one more thing that I have noticed about Epson's (I have 3 of them).. You really should load the drivers and utility program even before you connect the printer.. Once these are installed, then shutdown and connect the printer.

BTW, did you check in BIOS to make sure the lpt1 port was enabled and using ECP/EPP compatibility??

i downloaded the right driver
(i thought i would be smart and utilize my time
while it was downloading i said, "i'll turn this LPT port off and on, i disabled it, then couldn't enable it, it disappeared from my control panel/system/hardware devices)
finished downloading, fortunately i didn't have a heart attack, and i was able to click add new hardware, choose LPT, and directed to my...
Brand New...(drum roll) Epson folder
i'm safe for now
except, when i go to the manager it says LPT status inactive, ( i know i should of left it alone)
any advice
BTW you got any handle on what these different config setting are?
printers/properties/advanced, con0,con1,con2,etc

it's the port that is out of whack now

i'm with you, let's talk about the USB instead

the printer has it, but the computer doesn't

i'm going to find out if i can get a USB adapter
to extend out of my serial port, i'll checking this through out the day, while i shop online, so if you send some advice i should catch it relatively quickly, (you wouldn't want to venture into guiding me into installing a brand new USB port would you)

Frank - You may want to check out this page, which gives you some advice on installign USB ports, and this page which talks you through adding PCI cards in general. If you've never installed a PCI card before, the physical installation is pretty easy, I hope this picture is self-explanatory.

Frank:

The best piece of advice once you get the USB card, is to make sure it is being seen in Device Manager and has the latest drivers for your os and the card.. Then, remove your current printer and drivers..

Once that is done, DO NOT CONNECT your printer just yet... First, load the drivers and software for the printer again.. Now, power down your system.. Plug the printer into the USB port and fire it up..
