For some reason this keeps not responding, makes my computer freeze, and my cable modem has to be disconnected and reconnected every time. I know it is a microsoft product that has issues with win 98 which is what I run. (win 98SE) But when I went to the microsoft site to fix the issue, I wasn't sure if the fix I found was the right one, and if it was I sure could not understand the directions. Can someone help me please?

Are you running a virus protection program? I've never had a cable modem before but whenever I've had problems like this with DSL or dialup it's always been a virus

From Computerhope.com:

Errors relating to msgsrv32 can be caused by computer viruses and in some cases back orifice a hack utility to gain access to an individuals computer.

Verify that you have the latest updates for your computer virus scanner and that no viruses have been detected on your computer.

Additional information and help with computer viruses can be found on our virus information page.

No it definately is not a virus. I keep Norton antivirus updated, and scan a couple of times a week. I know that it is a microsoft issue. It isn't an error, it just stops responding. This microsoft page explains the symptoms. (But I do not know what palm is) I don't have a palm device.

msgsrv32 not responding

I am at wits end and just do not understand at all. There is no way it could be a virus because this has kept happening even when I have reformatted a couple of times over the past 3 years. Plus like I said, I have good virus protection. What is a back orifice hack utility? How do I know if I have been hacked?

Here are some other possible causes:

Msgsrv32 Not Responding When Computer Hangs While Idle

This is also a possibility:

What sound card do you have? Is it a Sound Blaster live? If so, try updating the drivers for that.

Right click on "My Computer" and select "Properties". Click the "Device Manager" tab. Scroll down to "Sound" and click the + sign to the left. Select the device and then click "properties".

Please post again with your results.

After posting the above, I thought I should add this option...You can reinstall the file msgsrv32.exe using the Windows 98 SE System File Checker utility. Put in your Windows CD (or see *note below)

Click Start/Run Type in:
sfc
Choose the 2nd option: "Extract one file from installation disk".

In the "Specify system file you would like to extract" box, type in:
msgsrv32.exe
and click the "Start" button.

In the "Restore From" box, click the "Browse" button and navigate to your Windows CD (usually D:\win98)
Change the "D" to the drive letter of your CD drive.
*note: If you don't have a Windows CD, you may be able to use the browse button to navigate to:
C:\Windows\Options\Cabs

If you have trouble finding the .cab files, please post again.
In the "Save File In" box, browse to:
C:\Windows\System
Click OK

When prompted to backup the file to
C:\WINDOWS\Helpdesk\SFC
click "Yes". If prompted, click "Yes" to allow the creation of the directory.

You should see a "file successfully extracted" dialog box and possibly a prompt requiring a restart. Restart your computer.

If you see an error message, it is likely caused by a typographical error. Check everything very carefully.

Here are some pictures of this procedure that you may find helpful: Click Here

I hope this helps!

Edited to add Web link.

I don't have what you would call a "windows" CD. I do have an HP recovery disk that came with my computer that I got in 2000. It has win 98 SE on it among other things. I did try it without a disk as I do not know if my disk will work or not. How do I check to see if I did it right?
By the way I did run a sfc scan as well and turned up nothing corrupt.

"I did try it without a disk as I do not know if my disk will work or not." Angela-cc

Running the SFC without a Windows CD, you can often use this for the "Restore From" box:

C:\Windows\Options\Cabs

If the SFC extracted and successfully replaced the msgsrv32.exe file, you should have seen this dialog box:

If the file was not successfully extracted, you would have seen an error message.

Yes, I did it right. Now if the same thing happens in the future with that same file, do I go back through the same procedure?

Thank you for all of your help. Smile Smile Smile
