I just came back from a ride to the lake and I saw a sign advertising "worms and tackle".
Does anyone know exactly how fishing tackle got that very unusual name? +++++++++++ 08-12-02, 11:03 AM Koz A generic term for the man-made equipment used almost exclusively for sportfishing; also commonly referred to as fishing tackle.
In prevailing use, tackle fundamentally refers to rods, reels, lines, leaders, and assorted terminal gear.
The term "tackle box" is derived from this, obviously because it refers to a compact portable means of storing the assorted small items that comprise terminal gear: hooks, weights, lures, connectors, and so forth.
Natural bait is not considered tackle, hence the common term "bait and tackle" shop.

Where did the term tackle originate. My husband's second language is English. He always askes me how certain things are called what they are. (Try explaining why we call someone an Old Fart lol)
Why is it called tackle?
08-12-02, 03:06 PM Koz I guess I did not read your question very carefully.
I did find this definition:
Tackle: Any instruments of action; an apparatus by which an object is moved or operated; gear; as, fishing tackle, hunting tackle; formerly, specifically, weapons.
I will see if I can find the actual origin of the word. wink
