As Mr Sensitive - perhaps unwittingly - suggests, it's a "past time", in much the same way as dog-fighting and bear-baiting are "past times". In opinion polls, the majority of British people asked have invariably said it's time for this pastime to go and...barring some typical political compromising...go it will. And go it should.
