Is there a difference between a cantaloupe and a muskmelon? Does it just depends on where you're from, as to what you call them? Thanks.

You know, I thought they were two different melons until I saw This Site

They are apparently of the cantaloupe family also.

Thanks Giz. I had only heard the term 'muskmelon' in the south. What made me wonder if they were different is because I seen an ad from Kroger advertising them as muskmelons. It was such a shock because Kroger had always before advertised them as cantaloupes. In order for the sudden change, I thought they must be different. Maybe it was just a good ole southern boy that did the ad. Smile

The difference in the two are this. The us only grows muskmelon. We call muskmelons cantaloupes for some reason. Cantaloupes are only grown in europe. Now the difference is this, muskmelons are netted rinds and cantaloupes are bumpy warty skin. Check out you tube search good eats melondrama and watch full epi.
