WOW!!! Tough to find Juan!!! Nothing at your local supermarkets huh? Fleichman's used to offer one in the dairy case at the supermarkets here (don't know if they still do or not since I now use the envelopes when I make bread).

I found ONE site that you can buy online - comes in 20kg's. Could be an issue though since it doesn't have a very long shelf-life.
Anchor Yeast Oh...but this company is in South Africa!!! Hmmmmm

Can you replace regular yeast for the compressed/cakes? Are you baking or brewing?

I have a call in to the Red Star yeast sales rep, but, like Lydia, I think you are looking at buying a large amount. I was told that Red Star has 20 one pound boxes to a case. Almost every link I saw that specifically dealt with block yeast said to buy a small amount from a bakery.

That's the problem: the bloody store has instituted a policy whereby it will no longer sell blocks to the public. Don't ask me why, the clerk behind the bakery counter didn't know.

Baking. The block yeast always rendered a superior dough.

I'm no help, but just had to say that when my Mom baked ages ago, using that block yeast, I LOVED it. I always had to pinch off a bit to taste. The good ole days.

Now I'm craving some. Guess, I can go for the "Marmite" standby. Wink

Hey, thanks for your effort JR (Aren't I JR?) but all I see there is the dry yeast. I'm looking for the block yeast.

Sorry JR, I misread it, it said it comes in a block. I took it to mean fresh.

Aren't there any big supermarkets near you? I'm sure they would stock fresh block yeast. Asda/Walmart over here does.

I can't find block (a.k.a. "cake" or "Compressed") yeast.

The reason why it's not being sold in stores anymore is because home cooks prefer the dry or active yeast that comes in packets, thus there has been a short fall in turn over of thecake yeast leading to expired product.

I do have the addy/number for FLEISCHMANN'S YEAST:

240 Larkin Williams Industrial Court
Fenton, Missouri 63026
Tel (636) 349-8800
Fax (636) 349-8830

Then there is Red Star who states on their site
"RED STAR® Cake Yeast it is available in limited areas of IN, IL, MA, MI, MN, NJ, NH, OH and WI." - I do not know where Medieval Spain falls at exactly Wink

1-877-677-7000, write to RED STAR® Yeast, P.O. Box 737, Milwaukee, WI 53201-0737, or e-mail carol.stevens@redstaryeast.com.

That is the best I can do for you - other than suggestig to go to a bakers or a brewery/vineyard.
