Are they a special kind of cherry or do they do something to a cherry to make it a marchino one?

Maraschino cherries are cherries which have been cooked a special way. Here's a recipe for making them.

I have a cherry tree in my front yard and hate to see the cherries go to waste, or to the birds, this year so I thought I'd try my hand at Maraschino cherries. Has anyone tried the recipe Jelp posted, or one similar to this one?
Also, what about canning and storing once they are made? I know how to sterilize jars but do they have to be sealed specially or just have the tops screwed on tight?
