Name your produce (fruit or vegetable), and let us know your secret: how do you keep it fresh longer?

Because I'm not home often to eat, fresh produce and milk spoil before they are used.

I wash my letuce very well, shake off most of the water and put the leaves in a clean white pillowcase. I put the pillowcase in a plastic bag and then refridgerate. The plastic bag keeps the moisture from evaporating. The cloth of the pillowcase retains enough of the moisture, so that the greens stay crisp and fresh, and do not become slimy or wilted.

After picking tomatoes from our garden,we placed them in a window with sunlight until they had gotten softer, then, we put them in a paper bag and place in the refrigerator. This helps to keep them fresher for longer periods of time!

Here in the south , things don't last as long as they do up in the yankee land...
I keep milk on the lowest shelf of the door....I found out that it will keep twice as long there vs up on a higher shelf...
Soak a fresh head of lettuce ( take out core) in ice water for a few minutes and then put in one of those spinners...( they work fantastic) and then into a plastic bag and then the fridge drawer..
Celery I wash , cut into smaller pieces, and put in plastic bag with droplets of water still on it...Stand back 6 feet, and throw into the lettuce drawer..Works fur me....
Tomatoes ?? They're too damn expensive to have them laying around...Only buy whats needed...
Too hot to grow down here....
kActually, I do not stock up on a lot of food, because I buy for the day...I never know till on the way home what sounds good for supper....

I believe I am about as "in the South" as you can get.I am in Southeast Texas. The tomatoes have grown..(not one of the best years)..but it yielded many tomatoes. This is the reason that I put the tomatoes in refridgerator to keep them from spoiling.

They say they will get sugary if put in the fridge but they tend to grow when left in the cupboard. What to do?

I tend to eat a lot of tomatoes. A new trick I have is to buy regular or plum tomatoes, and if they get a small mold, I cut it off and add two grape or cherry tomatoes to the plate to compensate. Eventually I also finish up the grape or cherry tomatoes before they go bad, but they do tend to last longer. I do not rinse tomatoes until I am ready to eat them. If I see something which is intended for a dinner salad starting to lose its life, I eat it for lunch.

Don't forget to raise your refrigerator's temperature during the summer.
