I have had a Sunbeam rice cooker/ food steamer in my basement since the dawn of time (before we got married) and this weekend I got a hankering to use it, was all excited, pulled it out, followed the directions, and it doesn’t work. The light comes on, the timer ticks and everything, but no steam, no heat, no cooking. Boo.
But I’m still all in the mood for steaming. This one, according to the directions, could steam anything (corn, asparagus, fish, chicken, potatoes, all kinds of veggies and, of course, rice). It was going to be awesome!
Now, I want to buy a similar item so that I can steam the crap out of stuff. Does anyone have one that they really like? Heard of any I should avoid? I’m not looking to spend a fortune but I’m willing to pay for reliability and reputation. Thanks!

Thirty years ago, when I leased the kitchen in a tavern, I bought 2 aluminum steamers. No moving parts to break or wear out, and no leaks so far. Look at all of these options. Remember, you don't need pretty stainless steel ones. In fact, you may get by with just the Stainless 9" Folding steamer basket for $4.99. I also had a few of the bamboo ones, but lost them in a fire. (No, it wasn't my fault. It was wiring in a freezer I bought from my ex-wife. Roll Eyes )

Kendor, yes, I am not a complete moron. Smile

luckyladee, thank you, my mother-in-law suggested those as well. They seem like a great product, but I am not thrilled with the idea of putting more plastic waste into the environment...

Dorian, thank you for the visuals! I was looking at something like that at the store yesterday but cooking in general intimidates me. I'm pretty sure my mother has one of those steamer baskets, I'll have to ask her about it.
I'll deffinitely look into the aluminum steamers next time I'm at a store.
