My mother made what she called "Indian bread" by just frying raw pieces of yeast bread in a hot black iron pan in butter. She said it should be bear grease but we didn't have any. She said it could be made with sourdough too, not just with yeast bread. She learned to make it while living in northern Alberta, around Lesser Slave Lake.

LOL, that's funny, Bab. My mother kept a big can of bear grease in the cupboard, from bears my brothers shot. Talk about STINK! They would grease their boots with it. UGGGGH!

The people used to rub bear grease into the kids' skin, too ,in summer, to keep the mosquitoes and black flies off. Made the kids slippery and hard to catch, though.
