I wanted to get creative with baking for a "garden party" I thought I could bake a cake in a terra cotta clay flower pot (a clean one) and then use green licorice sticks for flower stems and thinly sliced pineapple rounds dries to resemble flowers, but have no clue how long a cake would take to bake in a clay pot????
BTW, the pineapple flowers are from a Martha Stewart from her humming bird cake.
Kitty, I can't say how long to bake.. however, why not bake at a slightly lower temp for longer time... until the toothpick comes out clean. I suggest you experiment before the important day arrives.

The other thing you might want to consider doing is to bake the cake in a regular pan..when it's cooled, cut it into cubes and then make some type of a whipped cream frosting/filling - layer it in the terra cotta pot - and then use the decorations from there... serve with a gardening spade...
Wow, thanks for all the links and the great tips, I didn't even know if I'd get a response, I thought maybe it was far fetched. I will definitely expeirment, the party isn't until the end of July. I will try both in the pot and also Lydia's to see what works best!!! Wow, thanks again!
