After trying many techniques, I have found the best way to boil an egg, and get the pretty yellow all the time, no gray.

Place desired amount of eggs in pan. Fill with just enough water to cover the eggs. Place on burner w/ a lid. When you see it start to boil, time it for 8 minuets. After the 8 minuets are up, turn the stove off, leaving the lid on and let stand for 8 more minuets. Run under cold water for a few minuets. Crack, peel and enjoy!

If you have an electric burner, move the pan to a cold burner, after you turn the heat off. Electric burners retain their heat for quite a while after turning off.

I've been doing my boiled eggs very much like this for years - the white stays very tender, and the yolk is cooked all the way through but not too dry when making egg salad
