I'm wondering how difficult it would be to have "hooks" on pants changed to buttons. I have two pair of pants that I recently got that have those little flat hook thingies and I hate them, I'd much prefer buttons. When I wear them with either a short sweater or a fitted top, it kind of shows. I'd prefer to have buttons put there and I know that means they'd have to put button holes on them as well. Is this easy for a tailor to do or should I just leave them as is???

Thanks!

A tailor/seamstress will have the modern sewing machine. Today's modern sewing machines come with programmed settings which do all of the sewing for button holes - some even cut the hole as well. Many machines come with hundreds if not thousands of embroidery and other fancy stitching settings as well.

Even older Pfaffs and Brothers can stitch the outline of the buttonhole, all you need is to use a sharp blade to slit the material inside of the hole stitching.

And putting on buttons is real easy, a few loops and tucks of thread and there it is.

With the right tool (sewing machine) this can be an at home project with a difficultly level of 2 you may need to practice first to get an idea of how the stitch work for the hole is made so you can get proper placement for your project.

David...as usual, you are a plethora of information!! I'll have to find someone with the right equipment cuz I am not a sewer (although I CAN sew on a button if so inclined!!).

At least I know it can be done!!
Thanks!

Hi, Lydia

You can do buttonholes by hand.

Make sure before you remove the hooks that there is enough fabric for an overlap as the buttonhole-side needs to lap over the button-side.

Then remove the hooks.

Then mark where you plan to place the buttons.

Then overlap the fabric and mark where the buttonholes are to go.

Then slash the material where the buttonholes are to go, being careful to make the cut no wider than the button.

Then do small blanket-stitches all around the edges of the buttonholes.

Page down here.

Then sew on the buttons.
