When I was in college I entered an "anything that floats" race with a raft I designed and built by sandwiching 682 aluminum beer cans (empties, that is, easily scavenged from fraternity dumptsters!) between two sheets of plywood. It had a, ahem, draft of about four inches while carrying two riders with paddles. It finished 5th out of about 40 entrants (the winner was a kayak made from two plastic trash cans joined top to top).

If you want a larger project, Dennis Weaver built a house using recycled aluminium (British spelling) cans and tyres (another British spelling ), but you'd have to ask the architect Michael Reynolds for the plans. Dennis Weaver's Earthship.Alternatively, you could attend the Earthship Building Seminar in Hawaii in July.
