Does anyone know where I can buy some small (8x11 for example) pieces of leather or imitation leather for backing cabochons?

I'm pretty sure Michael's craft stores carry leather scraps, Catty. I don't know if the pieces would be big enough for your purpose, or if these stores are located where you are.

How about this place: Recyclexchange
It's advertised as Canadian, but I see that many of the suppliers are based in the US.

Here's another one:
Justleather

I ran out of editing time, but found this:

Beaded Cabochon Backing Alternatives

The person here talks about using thinner leather, which might be more readily available, and cheaper, and stiffening it with plastic canvas. Just thought I'd pass it on.

Thank you dg, The recycle place sells in tons, apparently. And JustLeather, 5 lbs for $50. Maybe I'd better return to felt, huh? Frown

In tons? Oops, sorry, Catty, thats an awful lot of cabochons. I like that word, "cabochons", btw. I never heard it before. (Any suggestions as to how I can use it, when I next insult Fred? Big Grin )

But seriously, it looks like a really interesting thing to get involved in making. Good luck with your project. Smile

Get out your phone book and call every upholstry place in your area- home furnishings and automotive- one or two are bound to have quality scrap from larger jobs that you could get for a song.

Also, look at yard sales and thrift shops- damaged leather jackets and clothing often go VERY cheaply.... an outdated and torn skirt could back a lot of cabochons, I think.

Thank you MrsS! That's a great idea. I'm sure I'll be able to find some locally.

Thank you, dg. Yes, they are quite beautiful when made up, like vintage brooches. I can't wait to get started.

BTW, I have a lot of miscellaneous beads to sell cheap if anybody's interested.

Oops, I wasn't expecting to see you in leather, Fred. Big Grin
Anyway, just remember to polish the family cabochons weekly, and you'll have them for a long time.

I am always in need of beads, and other craft supplies, for my children's programs at work, Catty. But I suspect what you are talking about would be too delicate for kids to use in their projects.
Will you consider posting a few photos of your finished work to share with us all here? Smile
