Food company executive Edward Haas first marketed PEZ as a peppermint-flavored breath mint, sold in a pocket tin as an alternative to cigarettes. He named it for the German word for peppermint - PfeffErminZ.

Santa Claus had the honour of adorning the first PEZ character dispenser.

Sherasi thanks for the info. I seen some real old Indian Pez dispensers on ebay one time and thought that might of been the first thing used as a Pez dispenser. I bet that Santa one is worth a lot. They sell some Indian ones for thousands of dollars on ebay.

PEZ® is a registered trademark of Pez Candy, Inc, and they guard it very jealously.

Austrian food company executive, Edward Haas, invented PEZ in 1927, and it was originally sold in small tins. The original dispensers were introduced in 1948 in the shape of cigarette lighters as they were dispensing a breath mint for adult smokers. I wonder how much one of those would cost now?

When Edward Haas took them to America in 1952 the breath mints didn't sell too well, so he decided to appeal to children and and designed dispensers - topped with the heads of cartoon characters, animals, circus figures etc - that dispensed fruit flavoured PEZ.

A way to roughly date a dispenser is to check the patent number moulded on its side. This website explains how.

Did you know that an urban legend, still believed by many, says that e-bay was started as a result of Pierre Omidyar designing a small website so that his girlfriend could trade items from her PEZ collection? Another story alleged that is was for him to add to his own PEZ collection. This article explains.

How many do you have in your collection, Pace?

May I add: Being in the Antiques and Collectibles business, a word of cauction: Do not invest your life savings in Pez.....

Its a fun thing to do, but it will not last much longer....

A few years ago I warned people that Bennies was going to fall as fast as they came in...
It happened !

Pez is a fad - Fads do not last - Ask the people that brought SILVER.......

Hey...I have the Bullwinkle one! I loved Pez as a kid and still enjoy the dispensers....I have several Warner Bro's characters, holiday theme dispensers and the Star Wars ones(sadly, only the new ones...2-5 years old, none of the originals) all but 4 still wrapped....I have no idea of what any are worth, but they amuse me.
