1 cup water
½ cup salt
1 cup flour
1 TBSP. oil
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. vanilla
5+ drops food coloring

Mix water, oil, vanilla and food coloring in saucepan. Heat, but not to boiling. Add dry ingrediants, stir until thick- may be lumpy.

Cool, knead, use!!

* Refrigerate when not using in sealed container

Catty, I have always wondered the same thing!! It may have something to do with consistancy but I am not sure.

Originally when the recipe for playdough was made up it was edible using ingredients to make cookies, children would shape the dough and then bake it for eating later, I think its just a throwback from where the recipe originated, I will try and find the site again where I originally read about this and post it here later on.
