Myself and friend thought it would be a nice gesture to make or buy some small gifts for the residents at a nursing home here in town for Christmas. The only thing is, we are having a hard time coming up with an idea that would be fitting for all the residents. There are so many that are diabetic and on special diets that it would be difficult to give them baked goods although I know how they like them. We thought we might make them ornaments of some type with their names on them but that would be something they could only enjoy for a few weeks during the holiday season. Any ideas will be appreciated and keep in mind that there are about 100 residents, so nothing too time consuming, If we come up with some really great ideas, we may go ahead and do this for all the homes here in town, thanks. ********************************************************* 10-19-03, 12:02 PM IndigoFlavours Maybe nice scented candles would do the trick, or pretty picture frames for them to put pictures of their family in.
No? A magnifying glass so they can read better Wink
10-19-03, 12:24 PM psych major LOL hey good idea, something they can put to good use. The picture frames are a great idea and I will certainly add that to my list of ideas, thanks a lot.
10-19-03, 02:16 PM Sherasi What about simple lap blankets?
With inexpensive cloth?
10-19-03, 03:41 PM psych major another great idea, all of the residents use them and very few have one of their own, I will definitely add that to the suggestion box, thanks.
10-19-03, 09:25 PM Kelleygirl I assist at a monthly bingo at a nursing home and here are the prizes that go first:

10-20-03, 10:31 AM twinhearts What about a box of stationary with matching envelopes, or a box of assorted greeting cards, and a book of stamps? It could get expensive though.
Twinhearts
10-20-03, 12:48 PM psych major oh I like that too. You are right it could get expensive but what a thoughtful gift, they would love that. Kelley, I know the women love their jewelry and some of it is pretty tacky LOL but if they like it well good for them. wow you guys have really helped a lot thanks again.
10-20-03, 01:32 PM Georgia85 Two words....
Dollar Store!
playing cards crossword puzzle books sugar free hard candy lotion dispenser (for the ladies) seasonal door plaques or pennants
all the above are readily available at any dollar store! Big Grin
10-20-03, 07:08 PM Kelleygirl So true, Georgia ---and most of the people I know in nursing homes will treasure this stuff from the Dollar Store as if it came from Bloomingdale's.
Almost forgot--one of my girlfriends who helps out at a nursing home said that the patients always appreciate boxes of tissue.

10-21-03, 08:36 AM psych major Yes, I love the dollar store, I cant believe I didnt think of it. There is one about 2 miles from my house and they are loaded down with holiday stuff right now. I plan on going today and looking around. I think if I put together all the ideas I have gotten here, I should be able to come up with some great gifts for all of them.
10-22-03, 09:45 AM Georgia85 I think you will be able to come up with some wonderful gifts Big Grin
And I don't know about other areas but the "Dollar Stores" in Atlanta have outgrown the stigma once associated with them. They actually have nice quality items that don't look cheap!
11-01-03, 06:51 PM Judy How about the limes and whole cloves. You stick the whole cloves in the fresh limes and attach a ribbon on the top with enough of a loop to hang on a doorknob. It makes the room smell so good. Also how about a little basket with things from the dollar stores. Make it up like a gift basket with different things for the women and guys.
11-02-03, 09:56 AM angela-cc Plastic canvas frames are very simple to make, they work up fast, and they are attractive. If you go to the craft department of your local Walmart store, they have pattern booklets that are very inexpensive. These frames can either be put on a bulletin board with a pushpin, can be fixed with a magnet on the back, or even taped to the wall. I used to make them and they sold very well. FYI the materials to make one frame will cost about 25 cents
