My friend was looking through an abandoned house when he found a box of these weird looking coin things, some of them look like medallions of some sort. They have markings that look like an asian language, sort of like Japanese kanji or maybe Chinese or Korean. Some of the coins have deer or fish on them, and others have people. A lot have holes in the centers, and some have raised figures and they're thick and heavy. I think they're made of brass or something but I'm not sure, they have a goldish tint to them. Does anyone know what the heck these things are? Or what they might be worth? Thanks!

Here's a link to an image of some of them:

Coins?

Hm.

Like this:

Then yes, Asian Coins.

Here is a site which may help you figure out which ones:

http://www.history.ucsb.edu/faculty/roberts/coins/index.html

You must remember that there are many Asian nations. Thus they could be from anywhere.

Now as to the odd shaped ones, take a peak at this site: http://search.ebay.com/chinese-coin_W0QQsorecordstoskipZ50QQsotimedisplayZ1 (Yes ebay, sorry)

Look familar too?

You will find the butterfly shape and other odd shaped coins as well.

I would suggest taking them to a coins dealer and have him/her assess what exactly you have there.

cheers

David

If you are wondering about the hole in the middle, it's there so the coins can be threaded on to a string.

The place to start looking is in the coin books published by Seabys (at the Public Library)They should point you in the right direction Smile
