I can't find this anywhere, and I've looked. I want to know how to weave gum and candy wrappers.

I know how to make a gum wrapper chain like this: Gumwrapper.com.

I want to know how to weave them to make placemats, purses, checkbook covers and such. Here's a photo of a purse that is made with potato chip bags, so you understand what I'm getting at.

What I know of it: It's an art that guys learn in prison. It's a paper weaving technique they use in Mexico.

And I've wanted to know how to do this for about 35 years.

Lovely! I'll certainly be on the lookout for instructions. Meanwhile, you can practice your paper weaving techniques by following these instructions to make a paper basket.

Copy and paste the below url...sorry but I couldn't get it to work as a link.

Thanks for your efforts, Georgia!

Unfortunately, Carol Duvall admits there that she doesn't know how it's done either, so she just weaves her placemat similar to how we did in 3rd grade.

*sigh*

I'm really surprised that 2nd link wasn't the one you were looking for Frown

The maker of the purse you posted a picture of is George Vargas who says his technique originated from Mexican paper weaving.

Check out this site for more information and more links on paper weaving.

Hi
I've never done this, but I saw this company selling their bags in NYC this month. They had a TV showing how someone made the bags. The guy made a chain of the gum wrappers and made them into a circle -- length to go around the bag. He made a bunch of circles in the same lenght. It looked like he took a credit card and cut a piece of it off to use it as his sewing needle. He stacked two rows / circles of wrappers on top of eachother. He then sewed using the credit card, weaving up and down two rows of gum wrappers. Then he would add the next row. Building up. It was a very quick video, but hope this helps.

Welcome to AnswerPool kimmers!

I'm afraid that since lau posted that comment back in December and hasn't posted since, she hasn't returned and will not see your question.

Since this has recent posts, however, people will see it and hopefully someone will know where to find the video Smile

I found a link on how to make a wrapper bracelet. Maybe once you see the technique, you can figure out how to make the bracelet.

See here.

Good afternoon,
I too had been "forever searching" for directions for this weaving and come up with very little.
You might want to check out this web site:
www.itsourearth.com.
Although it doesn't give you explicite directions it does give you a little secret that I couldn't get out of anyone else....the sewing of it together. They are so perfectly joined they look like they can be woven that way. I have heard more than once though that it has to be sewn together. Fishline is the way to go with that for the strength.
I am working on one now and will let you know how it turns out. Directions on how to make just the paper chain can be found on www.gumwrapper.com like someone else said. I also checked out his LINKS and there is a site that sells cute little paper kits (as anyone knows it is not easy finding gum wrappers anymore).
If anyone ever finds out the secret (that's what it seems like) please let us all know!
