Remind us all: The US Administration won't ever talk with axis of evil countries or those that aid terrorism or insurgency or those planning on getting the means to WMD, is that right?

The BBC is reporting that there are to be diplomatic meetings between the US and Iran with a view to reducing tension and trouble in Iraq. The US line is that it is important to consult with powers in the region.

Since when has common sense (and doing what her diplomatically minded, experienced, ally does and would do) come to be part of the thinking?

"Since when has common sense (and doing what her diplomatically minded, experienced, ally does and would do) come to be part of the thinking?"

While it may have started with Nixon's finally noticing the most populated nation in the world (or coming to the realization that China was not going to be ruled by the one-time drug lord, Chiang Kai-shek ), it is taking a while to fully set in. The current talks may have something to do with the utter failure of this administration to do anything right in the Mid East except defeat an already-ruined army. It's somewhat akin to Dad at Christmas finally looking at the directions for assembling the bicycle after 4 hours of muttering (to hiimself, of course), "Well, [i[that's[/i] not right."

Cheney: We'll talk with Iran, but only about Iraq

"We are willing to have that conversation limited to Iraq issues at the ambassador level," Vice President Dick Cheney's spokeswoman said after he met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Lea Anne McBride said the willingness to talk with the Iranians about security issues in Iraq is consistent with U.S. policy and does not reflect a new position. - CNN

'Admiral William Fallon, then President George W. Bush's nominee to head the Central Command (CENTCOM), expressed strong opposition in February to an administration plan to increase the number of carrier strike groups in the Persian Gulf from two to three and vowed privately there would be no war against Iran as long as he was chief of CENTCOM, according to sources with access to his thinking.

Fallon's resistance to the proposed deployment of a third aircraft carrier was followed by a shift in the Bush administration's Iran policy in February and March away from increased military threats and toward diplomatic engagement with Iran. That shift, for which no credible explanation has been offered by administration officials, suggests that Fallon's resistance to a crucial deployment was a major factor in the intra-administration struggle over policy toward Iran...'
