Former Ohio congressman sentenced to 30 months

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former Rep. Bob Ney was sentenced Friday to 30 months in federal prison for his role in a congressional bribery scandal.

Ney, the first congressman ensnared in the case, pleaded guilty to trading official favors for golf trips, tickets, meals and campaign donations from disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

U.S. District Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle said that Ney would serve his time at a federal prison in Morgantown, West Virginia.

According to letters submitted in court, Ney was a functioning alcoholic who often began drinking early in the morning and rarely made it through the day without a drink.

The letters, including one from his doctor and another from a former staff member, were filed by Ney's defense teams in hopes of convincing the judge to lighten the Ohio Republican's sentence. - CNN

Ney wanted a contry-club prison with a re-hab program. Going to re-hab would have gotten him out in a year. His attorneys even requestef that he be sentenced to less than 24 months because of his alcoholism. The prosecution asked for 27 months. Apparently, the judge's sentence of 30 months is a sign that convicted public officialos wil no longer get a break because they were (once) officials. (Personally, I think any public official convicted of any felony concerning bribery or any serious variant should get an extra year or two added to whatever the standard sentences is. They should at leasst do as much time in prison as they did in office screwing the taxpayers. It sounds fair to me.)

Like the child molesting priests, congressional representatives should be held to a stricter standard that the people they profess to govern and/or serve. Kudos to the judge!
